Chiropractic
One of the largest primary care professions in Ontario, chiropractic is an evidence-informed, non-invasive, hands-on health care discipline that focuses on the musculoskeletal system.
Chiropractors practice primarily using their hands, providing diagnosis, treatment and preventive care for disorders related to the spine, pelvis, nervous system and joints.
Chiropractors use a combination of treatments, depending on the specific needs of the individual patient. After taking a history, performing an examination and establishing a diagnosis, a chiropractor can develop and carry out a comprehensive treatment/management plan, recommend therapeutic exercise and other non-invasive therapies, and provide nutritional, dietary and lifestyle counselling.
One of the most common therapies a chiropractor uses is spinal manipulative therapy (SMT), which can comprise a variety of adjustment techniques. Specific training in SMT allows chiropractors to provide highly-skilled and precise adjustments to the vertebrae of the spine, correcting joint motion to restore proper movement and improve function.
For many conditions, such as low back pain, chiropractic care is the primary method of treatment. When a multi-disciplinary approach is advisable, a chiropractor will coordinate care with other health care professionals. Where other conditions exist, chiropractic care may complement or support medical or other treatment by relieving the musculoskeletal aspects associated with the condition.
Chiropractic care may also be used to provide symptomatic relief for patients with chronic conditions.
There are many reasons to seek chiropractic care:
Back pain
Neck pain
Headache
Whiplash
Strains and sprains
Repetitive strain injury (RSI)
Work and sports injuries
Arthritis
Limited range of motion in the back, shoulder, neck or limbs
Chiropractic is a regulated health profession, recognized by statute in all Canadian provinces and American states. Almost 2.7 million patients in Ontario rely on chiropractic care every year to help them live healthy, active lives.
Massage (Non-RMT)
In Ontario, our massage therapists are governed by the CMTAO to ensure the safety of the public, the integrity of the profession and assist with policy development for Massage Therapy. As a massage practitioner, Janique is trained in Quebec as a Massage Therapist with an orthotherapy and yoga background. Her focus is to get clients the comfort and care they need to help them get mobile. She moved to Ontario with family, and practices as a full time RN with the LIHN. Although she is not registered in the province of Ontario for insurance purposes, Janique is a professional and provides quality care.
Physiotherapy
Physiotherapists are registered health professionals who are specifically trained in the assessment and treatment of varying medical and health conditions. A physiotherapist may use exercise, manual therapy, education and modalities (such as ice, heat, laser, ultrasound and muscle stimulation) to treat pain, dysfunction and loss of mobility. Health promotion, as well as disease and injury prevention, are a key part of physiotherapy practice. Individuals of any age, level of fitness or capability can benefit from physiotherapy.
Naturopathic Medicine
Naturopathic medicine (or naturopathy) is based on the belief that the body can heal itself. It aims to improve health, prevent disease, and treat illness through the use of organic foods and exercise; a healthy, balanced lifestyle; and the use of treatments from other areas of complementary medicine. (These treatments include ayurveda, homeopathy, and herbal therapies.)
Naturopathy was developed in the late 1800s in the United States. Today, both naturopathic doctors and traditional naturopaths practice naturopathic medicine. A licensed naturopathic doctor (ND) attends a 4-year, graduate-level naturopathic medical school where he or she studies basic sciences and therapies such as herbal medicine, homeopathy, and bodywork. Naturopaths may attend training programs that vary in length and content, but they usually aren't licensed.
Most naturopathic doctors and naturopaths believe in natural therapies, such as nutrition and lifestyle counselling. They may also suggest herbal medicines, homeopathic dilutions, physical medication (for example, therapeutic massage) or nutritional supplements. In some provinces, naturopathic doctors can also prescribe medications such as antibiotics.
Psychotherapy
Psychology, also known as talk therapy, refers to techniques that help people change behaviors, thoughts, and emotions that cause problems or distress. It is an umbrella term that describes treating psychological disorders and mental distress through verbal and psychological techniques.
During this process, a trained psychotherapist helps the client tackle specific or general problems, such as mental illness or a source of life stress. Depending on the approach used by the therapist, a wide range of techniques and strategies can be used. Almost all types of psychotherapy involve developing a therapeutic relationship, communicating and creating a dialogue, and working to overcome problematic thoughts or behaviours.
